Throughout the Spring semester of 2014, I have had the time and opportunity to develop my own philosophy regarding technology in the classroom. I believe that with our learners being digital natives, it is necessary to incorporate meaningful technology experiences in the classroom in order to create an engaging learning experience.
Because digital footprints are starting at a much younger age, I believe that students need to be taught appropriate manners and common courtesies when using technology. Furthermore, I believe students need to be aware of cyber bullying by knowing what it is and how to stop it. In using technology within my classroom, I wish for my students to learn how to be good digital citizens.
I believe that technology has a time, place and a purpose. Like everything else in life, I as a teacher must strive to find a balance regarding use of technology in the classroom. I believe that this is a personal preference, and that for every teacher this will differ.
Finally, I believe that technology should be used in a manner which will truly benefit the students and enhance their learning. If technology is not used with a purpose, then it does not belong in the classroom.
In applying technology in my own classroom, I wish to explore more of the tools that SmartBoard has to offer and to create lessons in which students spend more time interacting with the board. I also wish to expand my professional learning network to find other tools and technologies that can really bring math lessons alive. These are in addition to the concept of the Web Based Inquiry lesson which I hope to use one day.
